Tiny Desk AI is a viral trend where people remake a small office concert with AI. The original format is filmed at a real desk, with the band squeezed in front of shelves of books and records. The series began in 2008, according to [NPR Music's own history of it](https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2015/02/12/385532517/all-songs-at-15-our-first-ever-tiny-desk-concert), and its small-room sound became a format of its own. The trend keeps the room, the cuts and the song. Only the performers change. That is the whole joke: everyone knows the clip, so the surprise is who sits behind the desk. > "We have no idea how long this series will last, but watching our favorite musicians give unadorned, honest and intimate live concerts could never grow old." > > Robin Hilton, [NPR Music, February 12, 2015](https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2015/02/12/385532517/all-songs-at-15-our-first-ever-tiny-desk-concert) ![Tiny Desk AI video: a five-piece band behind an office desk, made from five photos](https://cdn.potto.ai/tiny-desk/band-fill-poster.webp?v=dd081a2e71) *A frame from a Tiny Desk AI video made from five AI-generated photos.* ## Where the Tiny Desk AI clip comes from The clip is a 2023 desk concert, reported by [Okayplayer](https://www.okayplayer.com/charlie-wilson-tiny-desk) and [NPR station KPBS](https://www.kpbs.org/news/2023/06/05/charlie-wilson-tiny-desk-concert). The band plays "Outstanding", a 1982 funk single that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Black Singles chart in February 1983. [Outstanding Tiny Desk original](https://aitinydeskmeme.com/guides/outstanding-tiny-desk-original) covers the real concert. The structure is simple. The lead singer gets the camera twice, up close. A sax player takes a solo between those moments, and wide shots show the whole band. That structure is easy to remake with new faces. ## How the Tiny Desk AI trend started The AI wave began on October 18, 2026. A TikTok parody swapped the band for the coaches of college football teams that had just lost. Versions with pro football teams followed on October 23. Within days, people were casting friends, coworkers and group chats. By October 25, trend trackers showed the search term tiny desk ai passing other AI trends in US Google searches. The [Tiny Desk AI trend](https://aitinydeskmeme.com/guides/tiny-desk-ai-trend) page has the full timeline, and the [AI Tiny Desk meme guide](https://aitinydeskmeme.com/guides/ai-tiny-desk-meme) lists the casting ideas that spread fastest. ## What a Tiny Desk AI video contains Every video follows the same plan. It runs 19 seconds and has five shots, all joined by hard cuts: the band, a lead singer close-up, a sax solo, the band again and a final close-up. The [Tiny Desk AI template guide](https://aitinydeskmeme.com/guides/tiny-desk-ai-template) times each shot. The photos you upload become the band members. Photo 1 is the lead singer, photo 2 plays the sax, photo 3 plays the keyboard, and photos 4 and 5 are the backing singers. AI fills any seat you leave empty. ## Who can join the band Each photo needs one clear subject facing the camera. These all work: - Friends, family and coworkers, as long as they are adults and agree to appear. - Cartoon, anime and game characters. - Pets, such as a dog as the lead singer. - A mix of all three in one band. ## Make your own Tiny Desk AI video You can make one on the [AI Tiny Desk Meme generator](https://aitinydeskmeme.com) in a few minutes.
